As an entrepreneur, what you do every day can define how successful you are in achieving your business goals.

Think about it.  You can either start the day cursing the alarm clock as you fall out of bed bleary eyed, stumbling towards the kettle to make your first fix of coffee.  Or you can have a routine that leaves you feeling calm, motivated and ready for whatever the day has to throw at you!

Now I’m not a morning person by any means but I’ve found that having a routine when I first get up is essential if I want to start the day the right way.  If I miss this routine for any reason then it certainly has an impact on how I feel and act during the day – sometimes grumpy, unfocused or demotivated (or all three!).

And because how you start your day can have a positive or negative impact on your mood and how you work, then it can also affect the success of your business.

So here are 8 things smart business owners do every day to ensure they stay motivated and focused.

Have a morning routine.  As I mentioned, I may not be an early bird but I do understand the importance of starting your day off in the right way.  Because if you don’t then this can affect your attitude and thinking for the rest of the day.  Having a morning routine – whether that’s going for a run, meditating, or writing in your journal – will help to ensure that you start off the day in the right frame of mind.

Focus on what’s important.  Trying to juggle a growing to do list is a surefire way to feeling overwhelmed and demotivated. Yes we’ve all got a 101 things we could be doing but if you want to be successful in achieving them then you’ve got to focus on what’s important to you and your business.  So review your action list regularly to see if it’s still relevant.  Then pick no more than 3 things to do each day that will move your business forward.

Know where you’re going.  You wouldn’t set off on a journey without knowing the destination so why would you do that in your business?  By knowing what you’re aiming for, you can create a clear plan of action on how to get there.  By doing that, you will know exactly what you should be focusing on each day to move you towards where you want to be.

Delegate.  If you’re spending hours trying to sort out your expenses or designing a PowerPoint presentation, then that’s time you’re not focusing on earning money for your business.  Smart business people delegate their non-fee earning tasks so they have more time and energy to spend on looking after existing clients and attracting new ones.

Switch off.  It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day stuff of being a business owner, but the only problem is that it doesn’t leave you time to plan and think.  Schedule time in the day when you switch off from your phone and emails, and any other distractions.  Making space for some self-reflection on where you are now, where you’ve come from and where you want to go will help to remind you why you’re doing what you’re doing and whether you’re on the right track.

Embrace the day.  As a business owner, you know that there are going to be good days and not so good days (to be put it mildly!).  How you deal with these challenges and successes will determine how successful you are in growing your business.  Embrace whatever the day brings, learn from it and move on as best you can.

Make time for yourself.  As I mentioned above, you’ll always have 101 things on your to do list but being a successful business owner isn’t about running yourself into the ground, it’s about having the space and time to work and to play.  So spend some quality hours doing what you enjoy and if you have to block out time in your schedule to do this then so be it.  If you really don’t have the time then think about delegating some of your workload so you can take a break.

Know what works for you.  It’s easy to read lots of advice on how to run your business or manage your time, but it will only be useful if it works for you.  Knowing the best time to work when your energy levels are high, what apps and tools will help you get the job done, and how you like to communicate etc will all make running your business a lot smoother and easier because you’re working in the best way for you.

So these are just 8 things that smart business owners do every day to ensure that they’re staying on track to get the important stuff done while having the time and space to go out and have some fun!
